Love that Remains
John 15:9-10, 12-13
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love…my command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this that he lay down his life for his friends.”
The standard of how we are to love each other is not reciprocity for the follower of Jesus. Jesus sets a new standard of love by pointing to the way the Father has loved him, and now the way that Jesus loves us. We can walk outside of this love by disobeying Jesus’ commands. Love is expressed through daily choices to follow Jesus and obey His Spirit’s promptings and word to us. Jesus further raised the bar on love by sacrificially dying on the cross for our sins.
Would we too sacrificially lay down our lives for others?
Love that comes from God is different from love that the world proclaims. To know this love from God, to remain in this love and to live this love every day is the mark of a follower of Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus, you have loved me and your love has changed me. Fill me once again with your love so that others might be loved through me.
