Every Word, a Reader's 90-Day Guide to the BibleSample

- God brings the exiles back to the land in three stages. Zerubbabel leads the first phase of the rebuilding of Jerusalem: the altar for sacrifices and the foundations of the temple.
- Discouragement and opposition bring the rebuilding effort to a halt. Haggai and Zechariah are two prophets rallying the people to see the task to completion.
- Haggai comes on the scene 20 years into the rebuild. The foundation is laid but the people’s attention has turned to their own houses. The crux of the message: God is with you; now get to work (Haggai 2:4–9).
- Zechariah is not as straightforward, involving symbolic visions. Read carefully because Zechariah is quoted often in the New Testament. Look for prophecy about Jesus.
