The Well of Generosity
Nicky Gumble once said you’re never more like God than when you’re giving. For God, giving isn’t something that he does, but it is who He is. It is no wonder then that the bible is full of directions to be generous.
I remember being a child and being truly baffled by the idea of it being more blessed to give than to receive. In my innocence and immaturity, I was completely fine with only ever receiving. As I’ve gotten older I have learned the joys of giving, especially when it comes to my own children.
However, true biblical generosity is more than giving gifts. Modelled on Jesus’ example, generosity is a whole way of life. It is a way of being in the world that sees people as God sees them. Being generous means acknowledging the many ways I am rich and being ready and willing to be generous at every opportunity.
Digging the well of generosity is all about developing this way of life. Left unattended, it is so easy to slide into self-centeredness, focusing on my own needs. But God is calling us to dig deep into the well of generosity and live lives that are others-centred.
