Moving Through FearSample
I Will Never Be Shaken
Our souls can only find true rest in Someone not some thing. There is no other place to find true rest, peace, and freedom from fear.
Truly my soul finds rest in God;
my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. (Psalm 62:1-2 NIV)
“I will never be shaken” is a statement about our fears. But I’ve often felt shaken, haven’t you? When we experience the loss of a loved one, we feel shaken. When we encounter financial challenges, we feel shaken. When we come upon life-altering decisions, we feel shaken. When we suffer extreme physical pain, we feel shaken. What does the psalm mean, “I will never be shaken”? Haven’t we all felt shaken?
The word “truly” is used twice in this passage. It’s as though David, the author, is convincing himself that what he is saying is true. “No, really. This is how it works,” he seems to say. In another version, instead of the word “Truly” it says, “God only.” Though these are different ways of phrasing, the meaning is clear. For real, God is the only way my soul finds true rest. So if there is actually something out there that provides the solutions to our fears, it isn’t a gadget. It isn’t a thing. It is God himself. God only.
Over the years, as we’ve made our way through our own shaken experiences, we’ve learned that God meets us in those very moments. It is by making your way through your experience that the reality of not being shaken can grow in you. We wish there was an easier way. But with fear, the only way past it is through. And not just through, but with and through.
Lord, right now I remember that you are with me as I feel my current fear. I trust that a new level of connection with you is available to me as I stop hiding. Thank you that you are my rock, my salvation and my fortress.
