Moving Through Fear

DAY 2 OF 7

Feeling Your Fear

Feeling your fear is key to moving through it. We spend all kinds of misdirected energy trying to hide from, push away, or numb our fears. That’s where we get into trouble as various addictions seek to keep our fears at bay. As we simply speak aloud and then feel our fears, the angst of them can begin to dissipate and we become free. We can relax, and the stuff that we are worried about can begin to fade. Shining a light on our deeper fears can bring calmness to the situation, and we are able to move forward. Fear can sometimes hide, masquerading as something else such as perfectionism or frustration. You then find yourself down a path that you didn’t choose, and you can’t figure out how you got there.

This speaking out loud and feeling pattern can help at many levels of fear. Sometimes it’s the mere acknowledgment that can take the sting out of your mood. However, sometimes it takes much more time and intention to notice, feel, and then move through fear. Over time we can move through lower intensity situations quickly as we practice seeing things as they are, feeling our emotions, accepting what happened, and moving toward healing. No doubt, this can be a long process. We are talking about overcoming years of patterns of staying trapped in fear. On the path of transformation it is okay for things to take as long as they take.

Most of us have a built-in barrier to fear and will want to push it away at all costs. You can dig around a bit, find the fear, say it out loud, and let yourself feel it at the level in which you are able. As it is seen, the possibility for healing grows. Depending on the situation, the length of time you sit in the feeling will vary. And if you have deep-seated, overwhelming fears, it might be good to seek professional counsel. You don’t need to traverse this path alone. In your day-to-day life, however, this process can be quite helpful for moving through situational fears. Remember that not feeling your fear is what leads to unhelpful behaviors.

Lord, grant me the courage to notice my fears and say them out loud in your presence. I trust that you are with me. I desire transformation at the deepest level. Meet me here. I receive your grace.
