Daniel’s Fast

The story of Daniel reminds us of God’s faithfulness, and that He promises to bless and care for those who honour Him. Daniel and his friends didn’t have to reject the food given to them and go against the grain in this situation. In fact, it would have been a lot easier for them to abandon their Hebrew traditions and just conform to the Babylonian culture they’d been captured and forced into. It can’t have been easy for Daniel to praise God in those moments. It’s easy to imagine him sitting around the feasting tables in the King’s palace thinking to himself, “Well, we’re in enemy territory now. We’ve been taken from our homes. God has abandoned us, so what’s the point in following His rules now?”. 

However, instead of living with a mind-set of defeat, Daniel and his four friends chose to have a Heavenly perspective and to honour God’s instructions. They chose to hunger for His goodness over earthly approval. We can see that God in turn blesses them and gives them opportunities they would have otherwise missed out on. He will always take care of those who sacrifice something for Him; He will always look out for those who put Him first.
