Daily Bible Reading — Sustained By God’s Word Of HopeSample
April 10
Introduction
Jesus describes the coming of God’s reign that raises questions about its timing in human history. He speaks of God’s presence at work in the world and the need for faithfulness. He references the story of Noah (Genesis 6—9) and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah during the days of Lot (Genesis 19) and speaks of his own destiny which will involve suffering (verse 25). Scholars have described Jesus’s concluding statement (verse 37) as the final manifestation of God’s reign when the Roman Empire will be reduced like vultures feeding on a corpse. (Some translators render “vultures” as “buzzards.” In both cases the reference is to “eagles” and is understood to refer to the Roman army which had an eagle as its symbol.)
