Lent: With One VoiceSample
A HEART TO SERVE
When I was eleven, I had the opportunity to shake the hand of the President of the United States. I was selected by my class to meet with the big man alongside other members of our school. We waited nervously in a room for him to arrive, but he never showed. I didn’t care – to be selected above others in my class was all the ego-growth an eleven year old needed! Position can be seductive. James and John ask Jesus for positions of significance and authority, next to Him in glory. In part their request came from an honest heart – they wanted to be near their Saviour at the time of His glorification.
In reality, their request spoke of a desire for power and greatness. Jesus responds by telling His disciples that the true path to wisdom and authority comes not from a position or title but an attitude; to have a heart to serve. As we embrace a servant heart, we truly become followers of Jesus, the only place where true greatness is found.
FOR REFLECTION
• In my work, my family, my relationships, do I harbour any desire for authority and power that is contrary to the Kingdom of God?
• In what ways can I be a servant to all today? Who can I serve who might least expect it?
PRAYER
Father, Your word teaches us that all authority in heaven and on earth is Yours. Thank You for Your sovereignty over all things. Teach me to embrace the heart of Your Son Jesus, and show me how I can serve, true and well, those You have placed around my life. In Jesus's name, amen.

About this Plan
A Lent devotional material created by the pastors of International Churches of Hong Kong, a guide for decisions, a vision of the future and a challenge to lifestyle. It is a subversive material that undermines contemporary assumptions and defies social norms. It is all of this because it is the Word of God as recorded by Mark and others, and therefore is about the transformation of people and communities.
