Read To Me Daily Semester 2Sample
1SAMUEL 14:
As we have heard so far in 1st Samuel, hostilities with the Philistines heated up to full war, and Israel was badly outnumbered. The Israelites had been kept down so much that they were basically unarmed for war. Saul and his son's army dwindled down from 3,000 men to only 600, and Samuel didn't show up for the important before-war sacrifice.
PSALM 98:
Today’s poem, Psalm 98 is another favorite! I love psalms where things like oceans, rivers, or trees clap their hands. I recommend this psalm for anyone who feels that we can only worship God with the ‘good old’ hymns.
ROMANS 5:
As we turn to Romans again today, I point out this: Every little detail in the story of Abraham is important. Note in yesterday's reading that Abraham “figured his body was as good as _dead_,” and “Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life.” Then we read that we must “believe in [God]— the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.” And we will find another concept related to this theme about death and resurrection as we continue in Romans. Watch for it!
Let’s pray.
Our Lord Jesus, we thank You that You willingly became the sacrifice to pay for our sins. You bore the wrath of God against sin for our sake. You paid the penalty that rightfully belongs to us. You did this because God is a righteous and just Judge, which means that He could not just ignore our sin. You came so that God could finally deal with the problem of sin. He could not arbitrarily hold some people guilty and forgive others. That would be unjust. There needed to be a sacrifice that no one person or group of humans could pay. Sacrificing thousands of animals could not pay for the sin of humans. And Scripture says that all this was planned before the foundation of the world. Lord, your kindness to us is so high and deep and wide, and I pray that I and my listener would understand it in a deeper way. Lord Jesus, thank You that your gift is free to us, but it was not cheap! So we ask that you would enable us to show its exceeding value by the way we live today.
