Respecting the Elderly
You may not realize this yet, but sometimes our culture doesn’t do a good job of honoring those who are older. We get impatient with them when they don’t hear us the first time, and we get irritated when they don’t understand what the latest emojis mean or how to post to Instagram. We hurry them along from store to store. We don’t listen with both ears when they are sharing stories from years gone by because they’re slow, and TBH, sometimes the stories seem boring.
We don’t always show them the respect they need. Instead, our culture focuses on younger generations. While that’s not wrong, it isn't healthy to completely disregard other age groups.
Other cultures, like ones in Asian countries, show continued respect to the elderly throughout their life. Young people take what their elders have to say seriously, they listen to them, and they are patient with them. To be elderly is to be respected in the community in many cultures across the world.
Throughout His time on earth, Jesus reached across all people groups: people from other cultures, men with fancy jobs, and men with un-fancy jobs, women from all walks of life, and of course, kids. He included all ages of people. His example should be our example.
What about me?
Treat those who are older with respect and take time to listen to them. They have much wisdom that can make your life brighter and richer. When you respect your elders, you set an example for those around you on how to treat older generations.
