Jesus Revealed Pt. 4 - Our Testimony: His Life

DAY 4 OF 6

Woman at the Well - Part 4

Thoughts on the Passage

The testimony of this woman.

The woman does not focus on the things that create arguments – Jesus is a Jew; Jesus says that worship on Mount Gerezim is irrelevant; Jesus breaking the customs/rules of the land by talking to her; Jesus releasing God’s promise to her (an ungodly woman). No, she leaves her jug of water – her purpose for coming to the well, and she goes and tells people she has found the Messiah. The people of the town know her – and all her failures – and yet they want to see for themselves.

The perspective of the disciples.

“Jesus, why are You talking to a woman, a Samaritan woman, an ungodly Samaritan woman?” They could not say it because Jesus felt it was okay, but they could not understand it. The only reason they could see Jesus speaking to her was to get some directions!!! They could not comprehend that Jesus talked to her to release God’s life to her.

Also, their attention was focused on food – here is the food, let’s eat. It had been a long walk, everyone is tired and hungry, they bought the food, and it is time to eat. Nothing is more important right now than this meal.

Except that Jesus is not interested. He is tired, hungry and thirsty. Still, there are things more important than the food He needs – this woman. Because the disciples’ focus is on food – they wonder if someone else fed Him already!

The ungodly Samaritan woman – leaves her water jug (and need for physical water) and goes and tells people about the spiritual blessing she received. The disciples of Jesus totally miss what is happening spiritually and focus on the physical food and physical needs.

Who more accurately describes my focus and attention today?

Application

Enjoy a good meal – with someone else who needs to hear about Jesus.

Enjoy the time with a friend – and focus on what God is doing in your lives. Do it while you walk together, eat together or share something together. Let a physical blessing release spiritual blessing on someone.

Time to Pray

Father, I am rebuked by this woman. I would not consider her a godly person that I would share a spiritual blessing with. Jesus did. When I am hungry or tired or thirsty, I know where my attention is focused – and it is not on the spiritual realm! So give me the heart of this woman – who leaves without her water jug to let her people receive a spiritual blessing. I would rather look like her than the disciples who missed everything. It scares me to say that because the disciples are to be the ones who think spiritually. So open my eyes to see things this way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

About this Plan

Jesus Revealed Pt. 4 - Our Testimony: His Life

We all have areas in our lives that we try to hide – we hide them from others, from God and to some extent, even from ourselves. But in one way or another, something happens that exposes these areas and we are left with a choice. In Plan 4 of 19 we see how Jesus works with us to expose areas in our lives so that our testimonies will bring people to Him.
