Why is growing spiritually so important to a marriage relationship? Growing spiritually as a couple provides you with the foundation you need to maximize the full experience of your relationship. Much of the conflict couples face stems from a lack of spiritual and/or emotional maturity. 

But growing spiritually as a couple doesn’t happen just because you are saved, or even because you attend church or a small group. Growing spiritually results from ongoing exposure to, study and application of God’s Word (Matthew 18:20, John 8:31). It also results from a continual abiding in Christ Himself (John 15).

Here is another guided prayer on spiritual growth in your marriage. This prayer covers the portion of asking for God's intervention in this area of your relationship.

“Gracious Lord, open the eyes of our hearts in order to recognize Your grace in our lives. Encourage conversations between us as a couple that reflect on Your movement and intervention in our lives. Motivate us to spend time together with You in ways that develop us spiritually. Give us wisdom on what to focus on that will help us to grow in our relationship with You on a deeper level. 

Show us ways in which we can encourage each other to grow spiritually and help that encouragement to come across as authentic and not as nagging or criticizing. Cultivate our spirits so that we are open to the seed of Your Word. We thank You in advance for all You are about to do. In Christ’s name, amen.”
