What Is Generosity?

DAY 2 OF 6

Living a generous life starts with being wise.

We talked yesterday about how generosity is more than just giving. It’s giving above and beyond. We also learned that generosity doesn’t only deal with money. But, money is a big part of learning to live generously. So, how can we give money generously when we don’t really have much to begin with?

First, we have to realize why it’s so important to be generous with our money. It’s not because God is mean and wants it for Himself. In fact, God is the one who gave us the money in the first place. Every blessing we have comes from God, and that’s why we honor Him when we use those blessings to help others.

Being generous with our money starts with tithing. That’s taking the first 10 percent of money we earn—maybe through selling something, babysitting, a weekly allowance, Christmas money, or mowing a neighbor’s yard—and giving it back to God through the local church. That way, the church can use it to help more people find out about how generous God is.

Again, you may be thinking there’s no way you can tithe because you don’t have any money. But the habits we form today determine how we’ll live tomorrow. So even if you don’t have a lot right now, you can learn how to manage well what you do have.

But you may have more than you think. Check out this video to learn ways you can make money and how to manage your money so that you can live generously.

Living a generous life starts with being wise. And being wise with our money can look like those three tips—spending, saving, and sharing. Learn how to handle money now so that you can be generous later. But know that you don’t have to wait until you have a lot to live a generous life.

In today’s Scripture, you’ll see a story about a woman who had hardly anything, but she still chose to be generous with what she had. Because she gave with a pure heart, her gift actually pleased God more than the person who gave a lot.

So, you can be generous today with what you have. You can honor God by the way you manage money. And you can use money wisely so that you can live generously.
