 <div class="label">41</div><div class="p"> 1Then the man brought me to the main hall and measured the jambs; the width of the jambs was six cubits#41:1 That is, about 11 feet or about 3.2 meters; also in verses 3, 5 and 8 on each side.#41:1 One Hebrew manuscript and Septuagint; most Hebrew manuscripts side, the width of the tent 2The entrance was ten cubits#41:2 That is, about 18 feet or about 5.3 meters wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were five cubits#41:2 That is, about 8 3/4 feet or about 2.7 meters; also in verses 9, 11 and 12 wide. He also measured the main hall; it was forty cubits long and twenty cubits wide.#41:2 That is, about 70 feet long and 35 feet wide or about 21 meters long and 11 meters wide</div><div class="p"> 3Then he went into the inner sanctuary and measured the jambs of the entrance; each was two cubits#41:3 That is, about 3 1/2 feet or about 1.1 meters; also in verse 22 wide. The entrance was six cubits wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were seven cubits#41:3 That is, about 12 feet or about 3.7 meters wide. 4And he measured the length of the inner sanctuary; it was twenty cubits, and its width was twenty cubits across the end of the main hall. He said to me, &#8220;This is the Most Holy Place.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5Then he measured the wall of the temple; it was six cubits thick, and each side room around the temple was four cubits#41:5 That is, about 7 feet or about 2.1 meters wide. 6The side rooms were on three levels, one above another, thirty on each level. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports were not inserted into the wall of the temple. 7The side rooms all around the temple were wider at each successive level. The structure surrounding the temple was built in ascending stages, so that the rooms widened as one went upward. A stairway went up from the lowest floor to the top floor through the middle floor.</div><div class="p"> 8I saw that the temple had a raised base all around it, forming the foundation of the side rooms. It was the length of the rod, six long cubits. 9The outer wall of the side rooms was five cubits thick. The open area between the side rooms of the temple 10and the priests&#8217; rooms was twenty cubits wide all around the temple. 11There were entrances to the side rooms from the open area, one on the north and another on the south; and the base adjoining the open area was five cubits wide all around.</div><div class="p"> 12The building facing the temple courtyard on the west side was seventy cubits#41:12 That is, about 123 feet or about 37 meters wide. The wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits.#41:12 That is, about 158 feet or about 48 meters</div><div class="p"> 13Then he measured the temple; it was a hundred cubits#41:13 That is, about 175 feet or about 53 meters; also in verses 14 and 15 long, and the temple courtyard and the building with its walls were also a hundred cubits long. 14The width of the temple courtyard on the east, including the front of the temple, was a hundred cubits.</div><div class="p"> 15Then he measured the length of the building facing the courtyard at the rear of the temple, including its galleries on each side; it was a hundred cubits.</div><div class="p">The main hall, the inner sanctuary and the portico facing the court, 16as well as the thresholds and the narrow windows and galleries around the three of them&#8212;everything beyond and including the threshold was covered with wood. The floor, the wall up to the windows, and the windows were covered. 17In the space above the outside of the entrance to the inner sanctuary and on the walls at regular intervals all around the inner and outer sanctuary 18were carved cherubim and palm trees. Palm trees alternated with cherubim. Each cherub had two faces: 19the face of a human being toward the palm tree on one side and the face of a lion toward the palm tree on the other. They were carved all around the whole temple. 20From the floor to the area above the entrance, cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the main hall.</div><div class="p"> 21The main hall had a rectangular doorframe, and the one at the front of the Most Holy Place was similar. 22There was a wooden altar three cubits#41:22 That is, about 5 1/4 feet or about 1.5 meters high and two cubits square#41:22 Septuagint; Hebrew long; its corners, its base#41:22 Septuagint; Hebrew length and its sides were of wood. The man said to me, &#8220;This is the table that is before the Lord.&#8221; 23Both the main hall and the Most Holy Place had double doors. 24Each door had two leaves&#8212;two hinged leaves for each door. 25And on the doors of the main hall were carved cherubim and palm trees like those carved on the walls, and there was a wooden overhang on the front of the portico. 26On the sidewalls of the portico were narrow windows with palm trees carved on each side. The side rooms of the temple also had overhangs.</div>

 <div class="label">17</div><div class="s1">A Prophecy Against Damascus</div><div class="p"> 1A prophecy against Damascus:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;See, Damascus will no longer be a city</div><div class="q2">but will become a heap of ruins.</div><div class="q1"> 2The cities of Aroer will be deserted</div><div class="q2">and left to flocks, which will lie down,</div><div class="q2">with no one to make them afraid.</div><div class="q1"> 3The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim,</div><div class="q2">and royal power from Damascus;</div><div class="q1">the remnant of Aram will be</div><div class="q2">like the glory of the Israelites,&#8221;</div><div class="q4">declares the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 4&#8220;In that day the glory of Jacob will fade;</div><div class="q2">the fat of his body will waste away.</div><div class="q1"> 5It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,</div><div class="q2">gathering the grain in their arms&#8212;</div><div class="q1">as when someone gleans heads of grain</div><div class="q2">in the Valley of Rephaim.</div><div class="q1"> 6Yet some gleanings will remain,</div><div class="q2">as when an olive tree is beaten,</div><div class="q1">leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches,</div><div class="q2">four or five on the fruitful boughs,&#8221;</div><div class="q4">declares the Lord, the God of Israel.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 7In that day people will look to their Maker</div><div class="q2">and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.</div><div class="q1"> 8They will not look to the altars,</div><div class="q2">the work of their hands,</div><div class="q1">and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles#17:8 That is, wooden symbols of the goddess Asherah</div><div class="q2">and the incense altars their fingers have made.</div><div class="p"> 9In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth. And all will be desolation.</div><div class="q1"> 10You have forgotten God your Savior;</div><div class="q2">you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress.</div><div class="q1">Therefore, though you set out the finest plants</div><div class="q2">and plant imported vines,</div><div class="q1"> 11though on the day you set them out, you make them grow,</div><div class="q2">and on the morning when you plant them, you bring them to bud,</div><div class="q1">yet the harvest will be as nothing</div><div class="q2">in the day of disease and incurable pain.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 12Woe to the many nations that rage&#8212;</div><div class="q2">they rage like the raging sea!</div><div class="q1">Woe to the peoples who roar&#8212;</div><div class="q2">they roar like the roaring of great waters!</div><div class="q1"> 13Although the peoples roar like the roar of surging waters,</div><div class="q2">when he rebukes them they flee far away,</div><div class="q1">driven before the wind like chaff on the hills,</div><div class="q2">like tumbleweed before a gale.</div><div class="q1"> 14In the evening, sudden terror!</div><div class="q2">Before the morning, they are gone!</div><div class="q1">This is the portion of those who loot us,</div><div class="q2">the lot of those who plunder us.</div>

He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18even though God had said to him, &#8220;It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.&#8221;#11:18 Gen. 21:12 19Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.</div><div class="p"> 20By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.</div><div class="p"> 21By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph&#8217;s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.</div><div class="p"> 22By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.</div><div class="p"> 23By faith Moses&#8217; parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king&#8217;s edict.</div><div class="p"> 24By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh&#8217;s daughter. 25He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. 27By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king&#8217;s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.</div><div class="p"> 29By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.</div><div class="p"> 30By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days.</div><div class="p"> 31By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.#11:31 Or unbelieving</div><div class="p"> 32And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, 33who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. 35Women received back their dead, raised to life again. There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. 36Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37They were put to death by stoning;#11:37 Some early manuscripts stoning; they were put to the test; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated&#8212; 38the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and in holes in the ground.</div><div class="p"> 39These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, 40since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.</div>
