You wouldn’t walk onto a battlefield without the proper armor. And even if you were covered in as much protective gear as you could gather, it would still take amazing courage to trust in your defenses enough to even put one foot in front of the other. Your entire victory might even depend on the strength of that protection. In this world, we’re on a much more dangerous battlefield than any that history can describe. Spiritual warfare is a term that means we’re not fighting physical things like flesh and blood, but that we’re in a battle with evil rulers of the unseen world. We need armor for that in a way much worse than we need bulletproof vests, but God gave us protection we can seriously trust. Walking in victory in life is as simple as wearing God’s armor— truth, righteousness, peace, and faith— and carrying the sword of the Spirit, which is His Word, containing all His promises to us that we can use to extinguish the flaming arrows of the enemy. Scripture says you’re a child of God, a friend of Jesus, God’s workmanship, wonderfully made, an heir with Christ, and no longer a slave to sin. He calls you chosen, holy, forgiven, and redeemed. We may have to keep fighting to keep our eyes on Jesus, but we’ve already been promised the victory. We’ll have daily struggles with our sinful natures, but you can rest easy each night knowing that no matter what comes your way in this life, you’re not responsible for winning the war over sin and death; God is, and He already won it because Jesus was on the front lines.
