"In-Group Bias"
Have you ever noticed that when you’re around people who look, talk, and act like you – in other words, people who share your race, culture, or ethnicity - you feel more comfortable around them? That feeling of wanting to be around those who are “like you" is your "in-group bias.”
We are all part of many groups – work groups, sports groups, church groups, neighborhoods. Maybe you’re a runner or into comic books. Whatever group you’re in, you know all the intimacies of your group – how to engage them in conversation, how to get their attention, and how to act when you’re in their presence.
In contrast, most of us lack a real understanding of those in our out-groups, the groups we aren’t familiar with or comfortable being around. And problems arise when we demonstrate our “in-group bias,” by giving preferential treatment to members of our in-group at the expense of our “out-group.” For example, if someone isn’t part of your "in-group," you may find yourself treating them differently, or holding them at arm’s length, because you are uncomfortable with or unaccustomed to their ways of interacting, talking, or connecting.
God calls us to treat EVERYONE we meet equally. Today, I encourage you to ask God to help you expand your "in-group,” so that it includes more people who are currently part of your “out-group." By doing so, you’ll display God’s love and honor to someone new – and hopefully, make a friend in the process!
