The Third Option

DAY 2 OF 7

Color Blind

When you get a tan on vacation in Hawaii, everyone tells you how great it looks.  But to some, a tan acquired in the womb – being born with brown skin – makes certain people less beautiful to some, compared with others.

Why is that? God has created us all in different shades of brown to reflect His creativity and glory. It was His perfect design that made you the shade of brown that you are. Plus, how boring would it be if we all looked alike?

I know that people mean well when they say, “I don’t see color.” But from my experience, saying that actually hurts the person the comment is directed towards, because it invalidates the burdens and blessings associated with their shade of brown, which is a part of who they are. It also makes them wonder, “Can’t you see me - in all of my beauty, uniqueness, and color – and still value me the way God does?”

No matter what your perspectives are towards people of different races, ethniticies, and colors, God can teach you how to value the multi-colored spectrum of all of His people. When He does, we’ll live in true fellowship with one another, and learn to embrace the beauty of God’s design in every person we meet.

Questions for the Day:

Have you ever heard or said the phrase, “I don’t see color?”

If you’re a person of color, how did that make you feel?

Will you ask God to help you value everyone you meet, exactly as they are?
