Challenge Accepted: BibleSample
We are now approaching the climax of John’s story – the apex of tension and also the lowest point in his journey with Jesus. Jesus finishes His conversation with the Disciples, prays for them, and even tries to give them hope that what is about to happen will not be the end (though they still don’t really get it). Finally, the moment they feared happens when a detachment of Roman soldiers approach them in the garden to arrest Jesus. Jesus’ power is even evident there as the entire mob that had come out drops to their knees at Jesus’ proclamation of who He is (18:6). And as Jesus allows Himself to be arrested, John is able to follow and see how this progresses – even to the point of watching the initial trial (John is most likely the “other disciple” mentioned in 18:15). Imagine John’s thoughts and emotions spinning out of control as he stands there mere feet from his friend and Savior, as He stands tied up, being mocked and abused by soldiers, having to defend Himself in front of these misguided religious leaders and ignorant political figureheads. It must have been all John could do to keep it together and not simply collapse in confusion and despair.
As you read today, ask yourself these two questions:
- What verse or moment stood out to me the most?
- What can I do with that in my life today?
About this Plan
Of the 12 Disciples, John was the closest to Jesus. So, his 21 chapters outlining the life and ministry of Jesus are not just historical fact; they are the fond memories of Jesus’ best friend. As you spend the week in this biography of Jesus, try to read it from the perspective of a friend reminiscing on the amazing things he witnessed in the presence of Jesus Himself.
