When we believe and follow Christ, we are changed. We gain wisdom and cease certain vices that were characteristic of us. We have become convinced that there is a right way to live and are striving for it. All this is wonderful, but there is a temptation that comes with our own personal growth: beginning to look down on others we see stuck in sin or lacking wisdom.
Paul tells us that we need to be gentle, kind, and patient to all people. Even though we might be wiser now and striving for righteousness, we once were foolish and wicked ourselves. It wasn't our own wisdom or moral strength that woke us up and started to change us either. It was the kindness and mercy of God that was undeserved.
It can be easy to forget our own process and to forget God's mercy in saving and changing us. We do need to be reminded of this so that we can show kindness and mercy to others who might be in process themselves. Perhaps there are people who are frustrating us in our lives right now. How can we show them the kindness and mercy of God?
