1,000,000 Chapters – Part 7Sample
Many times we are given things we don’t expect or deserve. Whether it be a promotion at work, a surprise gift from a friend or family member, or maybe a free coffee from the person in front of you in line, life is full of situations when individuals step beyond what’s expected of them to bless or encourage someone else, whether they’ve earned it or not. There’s something special in these moments, even if we’re not the ones directly affected, that allow you to see the benefits of grace, blessing, and encouragement.
The book of Philemon is a great example of this encouragement and grace. The letter is from Paul to Philemon, a wealthy member of the Colossian church, regarding one of his slaves Onesimus who had fled his owner and found Paul in Rome. Onesimus had stolen from Philemon, however when he found Paul he became a Christian. Due to Paul and Onesimus’ relationship, Paul writes the letter to Philemon as a plea for Onesimus’ forgiveness and release from slavery. He sends Onesimus back asking that he is considered a brother and is freed, but also goes beyond that by explaining that if there is a cost that needs to get paid then Paul will pay it. He is willing to step beyond his regular responsibilities to ensure the safety and livelihood of a fellow member of the Body of Christ.
As you read this book, think about the love and grace that Paul is showing Onesimus. Paul has a strong character of forgiveness and grace, however this model comes from Jesus’ example shown to Paul. How can our relationship with God affect what we say and do? If we’re willing to invest in showing the grace that God has shown us to those around us, how would our lives and the way we treat others look differently?

About this Plan
This is the seventh part of Parkview Christian Church’s series to read 1,000,000 chapters of the Bible together. There is nothing that equips or invites the Church to live like Jesus more than reading the Bible. The pages of the Bible capture God’s story and lead those who dare to read it to live out His story for today. That’s why Parkview is making the challenge to our church to collectively read 1,000,000 chapters of the Bible together. Will you join us on the journey?
