Obstructions to Change
Some people want the fruit of change - like a better marriage, freedom from debt or some other benefit - but they don’t want the discipline of change. So, when nothing changes in their life they blame God.
But the truth is that change requires something of us. Although we are changed by the Holy Spirit and through His grace, the process of transformation is by the renewing of our mind. How do we renew our mind? We have to change the way we think to line up with God’s Word in every area of our life. That doesn’t happen if we don’t replace our wrong thoughts with the right ones.
Sometimes other things can get in the way of our change. A lack of support or keeping bad company will quickly demotivate you. You not only have to fight to change but you have to fight the opinions and behaviours of others trying to influence your decisions. If this is the case, get into church, go to a weekly Bible study or around people who will encourage you toward the change you want to make.
Or it may be that you are simply doing nothing to change and expect it to just happen independently of you. Perhaps you have unforgiveness in your heart that is binding you up; maybe you’re discouraged and have lost your focus for the future.
Do you find yourself in a cycle of negativity that has you believing that you can never change? Make no mistake - the devil will take full advantage of that and drive you further into condemnation. But it is a lie! Remember, change is an ongoing process throughout our whole life.
Change the way you THINK. Your thoughts lead to your feelings, which then lead to your behaviour. Identify the negative thinking and replace it with good thoughts. Repeat these good thoughts over and over again until it transforms your thinking.
So prepare your minds for action, be completely sober [in spirit—steadfast, self-disciplined, spiritually and morally alert], fix your hope completely on the grace [of God] that is coming to you when Jesus Christ is revealed. (1 Peter 1:13 AMP)
