From Anxious to Peaceful—Conquering Your Fears
Fear is the fundamental barrier to peace, and it’s a deal-breaker when it comes to leading a simplified life. Fear is debilitating. No matter how much we’ve simplified our calendars, relationships, finances, and the like, when fear strikes, the whole deal blows up. No matter how good we look on the outside, we will crumble if fear has seeped beneath the veneer of our lives.
Paul’s words to his protégé Timothy make it clear: God does not want you to live with a spirit of timidity, under a blanket of destructive fears. He wants you to live with a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind—a disciplined thought pattern. He wants to help you conquer the debilitating, paralyzing, and joy-wrecking worries that hold you back.
God’s preferred state for humankind is that we live free from fear, experiencing shalom, or peace. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture is packed with references that emphasize God’s desire for a fear-free, peace-filled world. Christ followers who overcome fear successfully have learned that when they face their fears, God does His part. He shows up, and His presence is tangible. He is a more than adequate partner for the journey. And He has filled Scripture with words of truth that can keep your fears at bay.
Speaking words of truth from His promises is key to conquering what you are afraid of. The art of speaking truthfully with words of Scripture is a skill that can be strengthened with practice. Over time it will become second nature, and it will be a powerful weapon in your arsenal against fear.
Question for reflection: What fears are you facing today? Search for a Scripture that offers you comfort and courage; write it out and place it where you can see it.
