Trusting God When Life Is HardExemplo
We Can Delight in God’s Sovereignty
What do you delight in? What brings you great pleasure and joy? If you were to write down the top five things that delight or give you pleasure, what would you include on your list? Take a moment and write them down. You could label them The Five Top Things that Bring Me the Most Pleasure in Life.
So, what made your list? Perhaps your family made the list. Perhaps an accomplishment made the list.
I wonder what would have made King David’s list. Perhaps winning a battle or conquering another enemy brought him delight. If I had been David, that would have made my top-five list. What about delighting in the writing of another psalm and then singing it to the Lord? Certainly, it's a top five. At some point in his life, Bathsheba made his top-five list, which should caution us about what or who makes our list.
As with David, our lists are constantly changing. Some things on my pleasure list in my twenties have now been replaced in my sixties. One thing you must appreciate about David is that he never quit.
When you get to 2 Samuel 22, David was an older man yet still battling. Chapter 21 records several battles involving David against his archenemies, the Philistines. He won every battle. Then, chapter 22 begins with these words in verse 1: “David spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from the grasp of all his enemies and the grasp of Saul.” And then, beginning in verse 2, David reveals one of the items that made his top-five list during that season of his life: the sovereignty of God. Don’t miss this: David delighted in the sovereignty of God!
Has God’s sovereignty brought delight and pleasure into your life? Are you delighting in the sovereignty of God? I’ve discovered that until God’s sovereignty breaks into your top five, you will never rest in his sovereignty.
Don’t let the truth of God’s sovereignty confound or confuse or concern you; let it compel you as it did David. You may not express your delight in God’s sovereignty in writing a song, but you could express it through serving, giving, or sharing your God story with others. That’s what David did through his song: he shared his God story with others.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank you for your work in my life. As I delight today in your sovereignty, inspire me to accomplish something for you that will impact the lives of others. In Jesus’s name, amen.
