The Gospel in the Old TestamentExemplo
The passage of Scripture today was extremely long (and a little repetitive). But if you look closely, you will see a beautiful picture of the Gospel Message contained within this chapter.
Abraham was looking for a wife for his son Isaac. Rather than allow Isaac to find a wife among the pagan nations nearby, Abraham sent his servant back to his own people to find a wife for Isaac. The servant asked God for guidance, and his prayer was answered: God led him to Rebekah.
Let’s break down the details of this story. A father sends an unnamed servant on a journey for the purpose of bringing back a bride for his son. As the servant searches for the bride, he never speaks on his own behalf. Instead, everything he says brings glory to the father and the son, Abraham and Isaac (note verses 34-35). The bride agrees to come with the servant, and the servant safely brings back the bride to present her to the son.
Likewise, our Heavenly Father has sent forth the Holy Spirit to search for a Bride for His Son.
The Holy Spirit is active in the world right now. He does not speak on His own behalf, but He speaks to glorify the Father and the Son. John 16:13-14 says, “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you.”
The Holy Spirit brings conviction of sin to a lost world. As John 16:8 says, “When He comes, He will convict the world about sin…” As He convicts sinners, many will choose (as Rebekah did) to follow the Holy Spirit’s Leadership and come to the Father. The Church is often referred to in the New Testament as the Bride of Christ. As the Holy Spirit calls us to Salvation, He will be with us through this life, until we are safely delivered to the Bridegroom (Revelation 19:7-9).
If you are a believer, you are part of this Bride of Christ. Stop today and praise the Lord for the Work of the Holy Spirit in your life and for the Faithfulness of the Father.
