Day 3: Overcoming Lies About Identity

Have you ever been worrying about something only to have someone say, ‘just don’t worry about it’? The truth is, it’s not that simple. And when it comes to identity it’s not always easy to step out of confusing or negative thought patterns to embrace who God really says we are. Brushing over the identity issue or trying to avoid the subject won’t make it go away – and as we know that our thoughts, habits and actions all stem first in identity, it’s vital that we knuckle down into understanding the core truths at the heart of it.

Whether it’s about my value being found in my success or that my appearance defines me, I’ve found as I battle lies the enemy would tell me about my identity, the only way to counter them is with the truth.

When the enemy says, ‘You’re a mistake, you have no value’, I can try to rebuke that lie, but unless I fill its place with the truth of what God says, then it’s hard to resist the enemy taking that territory back.

Do you have a list of verses that you can go to in times of turmoil and confusion? Let me help you to get started.

You are not your past:
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

You are made wonderfully:
Psalm 139:14 (NIV)

You are valuable:
Matthew 10:29-31 (ESV)

You are eternally treasured and thought of:
Isaiah 49:15-16 (ESV)

You were bought at the greatest price:
1 Peter 1:18-19 (ESV)

Action it:

Today, as you look at these verses, no matter what the enemy is whispering in your ear, change up the fight. Instead of trying to empty your mind of those lies, try filling it with truth. As you dwell on the truth of God, His love for you, His plans for you, and the power He gifts you in your life to overcome evil, darkness will have no room to reign in your mind. Whether you believe them to begin with or not, you can start taking back your mind with the truth. Believe me when I say that these are just the start of the good things God wants to say over you.
