MEETING TOGETHER
Every significant event in history is inexplicably tied to a phrase or a concept in which it is remembered.
- “I have a dream…”
- “That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
- “Remember, remember the fifth of November…”
Currently, we are going through a moment in history characterized by “isolation” and “social distancing”. In Western Society, now more than ever, it has become increasingly challenging for us to gather together as a church. But do we really need to go to church? Is it a necessary part of our Christian walk?
We were made for relationship. God said ‘it is not good for us to be alone’ (Genesis 2:18) and then made Adam a helper, Eve. He quite literally made Eve to be in relationship with Adam. Throughout the Bible, we are regularly encouraged to meet together with God’s people. This is not for God’s benefit. He doesn’t need us to worship Him at Church every Sunday. In the book of Hebrews, we are encouraged not to neglect meeting together as others are in the habit of doing (Hebrews 10:25) because when we meet together we are able to encourage and ‘spur one another on towards love and good deeds’.
So much of what we learn and how we develop as a person comes through our experiences in various relationships. It is through our positive relationships with our Christian brothers and sisters that God gives us glimpses of who He is. Not only that but when we meet with others in the name of God, He allows us to be a tangible expression of His love for His people. Every time you connect with, encourage or show kindness to someone you are showing that person Jesus. What a privilege! What a responsibility!
Read and meditate on these scriptures today, knowing that every time you meet as the church of God, you are being given an opportunity to meet and draw closer to your creator. Remember that this devotional is designed to be read alongside the podcast series... of the Generation Podcast. Listen to the episode titled 'meeting together' on the podcast for a deeper exploration and discussion of why we should meet together as a church.
