Właśnie w tym czasie ukazał się dekret cesarza Augusta, aby ludność całego cesarstwa rzymskiego poddała się spisowi. Pierwszy ten spis miał miejsce, gdy Kwiryniusz był namiestnikiem Syrii. Wszyscy zatem szli do spisu, każdy do swojego miasta. Udał się też Józef z Galilei, z miasta Nazaret, do Judei, do miasta Dawida, Betlejem, dlatego że pochodził z domu i z rodu Dawida. Miał tam być spisany wraz z poślubioną sobie Marią, która spodziewała się dziecka. Akurat gdy tam byli, nadszedł czas jej rozwiązania. I urodziła swego pierworodnego Syna, owinęła Go w pieluszki i ułożyła w żłobie, ponieważ w gospodzie nie było dla nich miejsca. Na pobliskich polach przebywali natomiast pasterze. Na przemian trzymali oni nocną wartę przy swoim stadzie. Wtem stanął przy nich anioł Pana. Chwała Pańska ogarnęła ich zewsząd swym blaskiem, a oni wpadli w przerażenie. Przestańcie się bać — uspokoił ich anioł — właśnie ogłaszam wam wielką radość! Będzie ona udziałem całego ludu. Dziś urodził się wam Zbawca. Jest Nim Chrystus, Pan. Stało się to w mieście Dawida.
