199 Prayers for My Adult Child

DAY 6 OF 10

For the Child Who Is Holding A Grudge

Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.

Leviticus 19:18

Talk to God

Lord God, I pray for my adult child’s heart today. Give them insight into the long game of their bitterness. Help them see where that will end up. Show them other bitter people who can become cautionary tales. I pray for release today. I pray they will set free the person they are embittered against. Holding a grudge through life is no way to live because it keeps them tied to the situation or the person who hurt them. Instead, help them long to be set free from retaliation, rumination, and the excess pain that comes from over-nursing a wound. Please heal my adult child, I pray. Amen.

Think

Unless you allow emotion to inform behavior, bearing a grudge doesn’t hurt another person. A grudge hurts the person holding it. It embitters, makes our hearts cold, and gives us a very dark lens through which to filter the world. Letting go of a grudge brings light back in.

Take Action

Pretend the person you are struggling with is sitting across from you. What would you say? How might they respond? Now say this out loud, “I release you from this wound. I choose to forgive you.”

About this Plan

199 Prayers for My Adult Child

When children move out of the house, begin an independent life, and eventually establish their own families, it can be hard to navigate what role you should play as a parent. Mary DeMuth gives parents a language of prayer for their grown-up children. Even though parental fears abound as the sin of this world poses ever-present threats, take your children to the Lord in prayer and know they are loved by the God of the universe.
