Leading Well: 5 Choices for Christian Leaders a 5 - Day Plan by Michele C. Walker, Ph.D.Sample
Elisha Chose Prayer
Then Elisha prayed, 'O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!' The Lord opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.
There are moments in leadership that define both the leader and their legacy—moments when faith meets action. Every time I read today’s passage, I’m reminded of what it must have taken for Elisha to pray that prayer. Surrounded by an army determined to capture him, Elisha chose not to panic or pray for himself. Instead, he prayed for his servant—someone paralyzed by fear.
Elisha’s servant was overwhelmed by what he saw: the enemy forces. He was unaware of the invisible power of God’s army that was already in place, ready to protect. Yet, Elisha trusted God’s presence even when his servant couldn’t see it. Elisha’s prayer unlocked a new perspective for his servant, who was reassured by the sight of God’s provision.
This is what leadership in action looks like. Elisha’s trust in God wasn’t just personal; it overflowed into the lives of those he led. He chose to pray for his servant’s faith, knowing that only God could provide the clarity needed at that moment.
As leaders, we are called to build up those we lead, whether at work, at home, or in other spheres of influence. By inviting others to witness God at work, we help them rise above fear-based thinking—the kind of talk that says, "We can't do this," or "There are no more options." Instead, we remind them of a truth that transcends circumstances: God has already equipped us for every battle. All we have to do is ask, and He will respond.
Reflection Questions
- When have you prayed for the people you lead to have greater faith in God’s provision?
- How might God be inviting you to see Him working in your current leadership challenges?
Leadership Action
Be Transparent: Share your personal experiences of relying on God in difficult times, encouraging those around you to do the same.
Let’s Pray
Lord, teach us to consider those we lead by praying for their eyes to be opened to what You are doing in the workplace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
