Let There Be Light

DAY 20 OF 21

Day 20 – Shelley Marolla
(Calvary Townsville)

John Chapter 20
Title: Not Just the Gardener

Scripture: John 20:14-15
Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”

Thought:
There is an old reality TV series called Undercover Boss, where the CEOs from various companies go undercover in their own business to find out what is really going on among their staff and in their company. It makes for compelling viewing, watching how people treat their boss when they don’t realise their identity. As I watch each episode, I think: if only they knew who they were speaking to!

On Resurrection Sunday, Mary Magdalene goes to Jesus’ Garden tomb to find it empty and immediately assumes someone has taken the body. She was so caught up in what she thought was happening that when encountering the risen Jesus, she mistakenly thought he was only the gardener! What she thought was a mundane passing encounter with a regular guy was the single most incredible, supernatural, and life-changing encounter in history with the risen King of Kings!

Application:
When you come to your personal time with Jesus today, do you realise who you are speaking to? Remember, this is no ordinary encounter with an ordinary person. You are speaking with the Boss of the entire universe, who holds all power and authority over your life; let’s not come to him thinking he is just the gardener!

Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for approaching you like an ordinary person. You are the resurrected King of Glory. You have conquered death and hold all authority. I choose an attitude of faith as I approach you, commit my needs to you, and seek to honour you today.

About this Plan

Let There Be Light

At the beginning of Genesis 1, God spoke the word, “Let there be light,” and it overcame darkness. In Jesus, God sent the Word, Jesus, and He overcame the darkness helping us see God’s good plan for our lives. By reading one chapter from John’s gospel each day, with the accompanying devotion, you’ll see God’s nature in Jesus, God’s work through Jesus, and God’s plan for all to know Jesus.
