Let There Be Light

DAY 1 OF 21

Day 1 - Kila Kilaverave

(Calvary Port Moresby)

John Chapter 1

Title: The Power of an Invitation

Scripture: John 1:41-42, 45

The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Thought:

This is the first chapter of the Gospel of John. The first part of the chapter sets the scene of who Jesus is. Jesus is the One who was there in the beginning; He is God. We also read that Jesus was the one John the Baptist told the Levites about. In the latter part of the chapter, we read about the first disciples Jesus called to follow Him, Andrew and Philip.

I love Andrew and Philip's excitement when they found Jesus and realized who He was. Their excitement led them to tell others about Jesus and invite them to meet Him for themselves. Here, we see that Andrew invites Simon Peter, and then Philip invites Nathanael. Simon Peter and Nathanael became disciples because they were invited by someone who’d found Jesus.

Application:

As believers and followers of Christ, we’ve seen and experienced how Jesus has made a difference in our lives. We’ve allowed Him into our hearts; we’ve had a revelation of who He is. So, it’s only natural that others in our world will be curious about who this Jesus is. And just as Andrew and Philip did, we can invite people into our world and bring them to meet Jesus.

That invitation can be for them to come with you to your Connect group or a weekend service at Church. By inviting people into our world, we give them the opportunity to meet Jesus. We can never underestimate the power of an invitation.

Prayer:

Lord, help us to be like Andrew and Philip, excited to share the good news of finding Jesus with those around us. Give us the courage to invite our friends and family to come and see who You are. May our invitations lead others to a life-changing encounter with You. Amen.

Day 2

About this Plan

Let There Be Light

At the beginning of Genesis 1, God spoke the word, “Let there be light,” and it overcame darkness. In Jesus, God sent the Word, Jesus, and He overcame the darkness helping us see God’s good plan for our lives. By reading one chapter from John’s gospel each day, with the accompanying devotion, you’ll see God’s nature in Jesus, God’s work through Jesus, and God’s plan for all to know Jesus.
