What Jesus Said About Prayer

DAY 2 OF 7

Jesus said: Ask… seek… knock…

Jesus said: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened (Matthew 7:7-8).

The Greek literally says: Keep on asking. Keep on seeking. Keep on knocking.

Through prayer, we meet God face to face. Prayer is where I speak to God about things that matter to both of us, working together with God for the salvation and restoration of the world. Through prayer, the almightiness of God comes into motion – because God chooses to answer our prayers. Prayer is standing before God with people's needs and pleading God's promises for those needs. Prayer is standing before God as a priest: To worship Him, to pray that people will become reconciled to Him and to pray that He will heal and bless nations.

Prayer is God's way of bringing about healing, restoration, deliverance, salvation and blessing for people. For this reason, prayer is a privilege and a responsibility. Being aware of the need is a call to prayer.

Prayer often starts with a feeling of utter helplessness. The helpless person cries out to God. The believer desperately pleads with God to take action. Prayer is when I tell God that I cannot live without Him because the task and challenge are beyond my ability. Thus, when I pray, I call on the One who can do the humanly impossible.

Meditate on the following statement: Prayer is not trying to overcome God's unwillingness to help us but laying hold of His willingness to help us (George Muller).
