How to Stop Watching PornSample
Decide to Be Different
Porn is easy to access, feels good in the moment, and is becoming more socially accepted by the day. So why is porn a problem?
Porn devalues people made in God’s image, diminishes our emotional health, and distracts us from God’s calling on our lives.
But knowing the facts doesn’t break the addiction, right? No, we need more than just facts to find freedom. That’s why you’re in the process of making a plan to stop watching porn. Yesterday, we explored why we seek porn. Today we’ll consider how a simple mindset change can help us resist porn.
The first verse you’ll read today is about Job. Job chose to keep his mind pure, refusing to look at young women with lust. Not just when he was alone late at night but every moment of every day. Why? Because Job wanted to live a God-honoring life. He knew his weaknesses, so he decided ahead of time to fight lustful thoughts before they turned into sinful actions.
So can we do the same thing? Of course!
First, we need Job’s mindset. He didn’t just want to run from sin. He pursued God’s way of life.
In the same way, our goal can’t simply be to run away from porn but also to run toward Jesus and the meaningful life He’s prepared for us.
Then, we make a plan based on our weaknesses. If we know we struggle with porn, we need to identify when we’re most likely to face temptation.
Are you tempted late at night? Then commit to going to bed earlier. Are you tempted when you’re around certain friends? Then place boundaries on your relationships. Are you tempted when you scroll through certain social media accounts? Then delete that social media account or find an accountability app.
Whatever you decide likely requires some sacrifice or discomfort. But it’s an investment with a high return. That’s because each step away from sin also leads you into a deeper relationship with Jesus. And as you keep choosing to pursue Jesus, you’ll experience greater connection, purpose, and joy in Him.
So decide to pursue Jesus by identifying a few choices you can make to avoid temptation.
Pray: Dear God, thank You for providing me with wisdom from Scripture to help me fight porn. Help me stand firm in my decision to stop watching porn. And help me identify ways I can avoid temptation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Challenge: Are there consistent people, places, times of day, or activities that lead you to feel tempted? If so, create boundaries to keep your mind pure.
