KNEES: The Importance of Prayer

Your knees are very important! I know that is probably weird to hear but stick with me, I’ll tell you why. When you study the Bible and especially scriptures on prayer, you will find that it was important for our founding fathers of the faith to use their knees and pray. Even Jesus the Son of God used His knees and prayed.

You see, the time had come for the journey to the cross. Jesus left with His disciples to go to the Mount of Olives to pray to the Father. Jesus was about to be betrayed and crucified for the entire world. Then the Bible says something intriguing, “He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭22:41‬ (‭NIV‬‬)

The Son of Man aka Son of God knelt down to pray. Jesus didn’t have to get down to pray on His knees in the dirt. However, He paid no attention to the present physical discomfort for the future glory He would soon experience awaiting Him. He sought the Father in prayer because He knew He was the only One at this time who could offer comfort during this difficult season. Family, did you know it was hard for Jesus to give up His will? Look what the Bible says just 3 verses later. “And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭22:44‬ ‭(NIV‬‬)

Today's devotion is not about making you feel bad if you don’t get down on your knees every time you pray. However, I do want to point out that Jesus knelt down in His heart first before He ever knelt down in flesh.

Be honest, when tough times come your way, what is the first thing you do? Do you go on social media and post about everything that is going on in your life and expose all your problems to strangers? Who is the first person you run to or kneel in front of and ask for help? Jesus, our Rabbi, is teaching us one simple thing today, run to the Father.

You see, Jesus was humble enough in His heart to go to His Father. In our lives, there can be times when world events, natural disasters, spiritual warfare, and even plagues can happen which can freeze us in fear. We can then think of calling out to physical people who might provide temporary relief and solace, which could definitely be the answer later down the road. However, my hope and prayer after today's devotional is that your first choice will be to stop, assess the situation and go to the Father in prayer, through our mediator Jesus Christ for the help you need. Whether it’s mental, emotional, spiritual, or physical help you seek, our Father is closer than a stone's throw away and eager to answer your prayers.

Say this prayer with me. Father, thank You for being omnipresent. You see me and You know my name. I repent for not always coming to You first whenever I feel the pressure from the outside and my emotions get the best of me. Holy Spirit please remind me to always seek The Father first, His Kingdom, and righteousness so all things can be added to me. I love You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
