Whatever It Looks Like

We can’t control everything that will happen in our fasts.

Fasting is an act of undignified faith, inviting the Holy Spirit into our lives, and killing our flesh. When we invite Him, we don’t get to choose what He will do, what He will say, or how He will meet us. Be careful to not take control of what is happening in you during these 40 days. There may be things that come up—our flesh will become irritated, but don’t try to control what He is doing. Make nothing off limits to the Lord and allow yourself to be unified with Him and His will. When you give the Holy Spirit your fast and your time, you don’t get to control what He does with what is consecrated to Him. Remember, it will never be ours, it will always be His. Ask Him what He wants to talk about and what He wants to do in you each day of the fast. Don’t expect God to move in the way you want to see Him move. Instead, dwell in anticipation of Him moving.

Prayer: Lord, I release my expectations for what this time is supposed to look like. Do whatever You want to do. Holy Spirit, I don’t just make time for You during this fast but I give You the whole fast. As I submit my time and these days to You, I trust that what you bring to the surface is for my good. Free me from what I think fasting is supposed to look like and show me what Your will is for me. None of this will ever be mine; it will always be Yours. Thank you for modeling fasting and intimacy with the Father. Teach me how to do what you modeled for us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
