Creation: Devotions From Time of GraceSample
Creation is like God
Two years back, Tojo made me sushi. Hidekazu Tojo is one of the greatest sushi masters in the world. For our 12-year anniversary, my wife and I went to his restaurant in Vancouver. Simply put, this 4’9” man created the best food I have tasted in my life. On the walk back to our hotel, my bride and I looked at each other and smiled, “This!”
“This!” is theological slang in our family. It means “this is like God.” God is incredible like “this!” God is exciting like “this!” God is memorable like “this!” God is thrilling like “this!” You get the point. “This!” just might be the most used vocabulary word in our house!
The idea comes, once again, from the apostle Paul. He wrote, “God’s invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made” (Romans 1:20). God’s qualities, what God himself is like, is understood from our experiences here on earth. The reason we enjoy this is because God is enjoyable. Being in his presence will not be categorically different than this. Rather, it will be like this but (1) a billion times better and (2) never, ever, ever ending. If that thought does not get you excited about heaven, I have no clue what will!
So don’t wait around for Sunday to worship your Creator. When your favorite song stirs your heart or when a loved one holds your hand or when Tojo brings out another plate, smile and say, “My God is like this . . . but better!”
