We Belong Here

DAY 3 OF 5

Paul is very comprehensive, as he addresses the issue of church division. We can understand that unity is the apparent theme, and it is important to Paul. In Greek, the word used for the term I FOLLOW, translates to preference for a particular leader. This kind of preference led to a form of personal devotion that ultimately caused corporate division. In other words, personal devotions and preferences to a human leader instead of unity among members is worthless for a local church.

In the case of Corinth, these factions over leader preferences (a small organized dissent group) led to disharmony, discord, confusion, etc. That would be tragic, as no body can grow to maturity in such circumstance. Paul addresses it quite directly.

Take a minute to think of the world we live in, the voices around us… Its not only about global divisions, but also discord in our own lands. The world today is seeing a more divided group of people than we have ever imagined. The future does not show any signs of uniting people automatically. In fact, left unattended, the divisions will most likely get deeper.

Unfortunately, all of this is shaping relationships within the local church today. Unity requires effort. Paul’s solution to the struggling church in Corinth is to ponder on Christ. He asks in verse 13 - Is Christ divided? The way we answer this question is important because it reveals our inner convictions about the Gospel, Christ and the Church.

Questions for Reflection

1. Why does Paul ask, “Is Christ divided?”

2. Why is unity in the church is so important?

3. If the unity of the church is indeed associated with our union with Christ, how would you be serious in being a catalyst for unity in your local church?
