Yahweh: God’s NameSample
God’s actual name has been debated for centuries. While some Bible translations consider it to be “Jehovah,” a great many have designated “Yahweh” as the true translation from Hebrew. Though it is interchangeable with “Jehovah” and “LORD,” depending on the translation you frequent, “Yahweh” has been widely accepted as the correct translation for God’s name in Hebrew (YHWH) and ultimately speaks of the same all-powerful God.
When we know the different names of God, they reveal to us the different parts of His character and nature. “Yahweh” is one of the most “sacred” and personal names for God. It is so “sacred” that Jewish people for many years (and some still to this day) will not speak or write it. Thankfully, our God “Yahweh” loves when we call Him by His name, whether in worship or prayer. The same way He knows us by name, He has invited us into the same intimacy with Him.
When used in the Bible, “Yahweh” signifies a God we can know “personally.” He is not a distant figure way above us in the clouds, but one who walks closely with us. He is a God who wants us to know Him personally and one that already knows everything about us! “Yahweh” defines God as a person we can relate to and know. Aren’t you glad our God not only wants us to get to know Him personally but wants to walk with us day by day as a God we can call on intimately by His great name?
