There's Hope For Today

DAY 336 OF 366

The first clear negative words in the Bible are: “not good” – it is “not good that man should be alone.” Genesis is a positive, creative whirlwind. The light was good. The land was good. The vegetables and fruits were good. The day and night were good. The fish and birds were good. The beasts, livestock and creeping things were good. Even the gold was good. But when man was viewed in a solitary state, God said: “not good.” For Adam, there was not a helper fit for him. So God said, “I will make a helper fit for him.” The Hebrew translation is best rendered, “a helper comparable to him.” God did not make the woman to be servant/slave/apprentice/ subordinate, but rather, a helper comparable to him – a perfect fit! Adam was impressed with God’s handiwork: “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” The text seems to indicate that Adam felt that creation was complete, now that Eve stepped into his life. A recent article argued that solitary confinement drives prisoners into insanity. Who would dare argue the point? We are made for God – for intimacy – for teamwork – for shared gifts – for making another, or others, a little more complete. To have the whole world, and to be alone is … “not good.”
