There's Hope For Today

DAY 17 OF 366

When the teacher asked if he might use his boat, the fisherman was happy to oblige. He had fished all night but no repair was needed for his old nets, only cleaning. Anchored in the cove, the teacher’s words carried over the water to a crowd on the shore.

The fisherman sat in the back of the boat, listening intently as he ran the nets through his fingers. The crowd was leaving when the teacher said, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” “Why not?” he thought. “Maybe my luck will change.” With practiced skill he cast the net, completely unprepared for what happened next. The boat lurched. The net was filled with fish. It was only with the help of his friends that the catch was saved. By the time the bow scraped the sandy shore, his net was in tatters; a total loss. What would he do tomorrow? Staring at the tangled netting, he heard the teacher say, “Follow me.” He dropped the net, and followed.

We might learn a lesson from the fisherman. Impulsive, but wise, he lay down the tattered remains of his old life and followed Jesus. In the end Peter traded his job for a cause, and two boatloads of fish for a crown.
