DAY 7 OF 50

Occupy Till I Come

And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. (Luke 19:13 KJV)

God doesn't want us to shrink from the world; that has never been part of His plan. Before the fall of man, He wanted Adam to spread out over the earth, subdue it, and have dominion. Even more so, in a world ravaged by sin, God's plan remains that we go out there, and be the light in a sin-darkened world.

Occupy is not a passive word. In this context, it is an unambiguous action word. As light ("Ye are the light of the world." [Matthew 5:14 KJV]), think of what will actually happen if you act on this instruction to occupy the sin-darkened world of business. Well, here's what: “And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it].” (John 1:5 AMPC)

The. Light. Shines. On.

Dwell upon that for a moment.

While God has a specific purpose for individual businesses, it is His overarching vision that every Christian businessperson stewards the business in a way that upholds the standards of righteousness in the marketplace. That, in fact, is what it means to seek first the Kingdom, and His righteousness, for what is the Kingdom if not "righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." (Romans 14:17 AMP)

In reality, you don't own the business. You don't even own your own life (You were bought with a price. [1 Corinthians 7:23 AMP]). What you really are is a steward who has been handed resources and told to occupy until the Master returns to receive an account.

The wise thing to do is to stay in constant touch with headquarters for guidance on what direction to steer the business. It is what the Lord meant when He taught us to pray “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:9 KJV).

More importantly, it is the example of life that He left us: “I tell you, the Son is able to do nothing of Himself (of His own accord); but He is able to do only what He sees the Father doing, for whatever the Father does is what the Son does in the same way [in His turn].” (John 5:19 AMPC)
