DAY 38 OF 50

People Need Something to Believe in

And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.  Habakkuk 2:2 KJV

It is impossible to lead an organization on a path of sustained performance without a clear vision that galvanizes and directs action. Imagine for a minute what will happen if you took out the goalposts in the middle of a soccer game. The game will understandably be drained of all excitement. After a while, everyone will tire of just dribbling the ball around aimlessly.

A team's productivity will similarly dip if there is no clear vision dictating what people do when they clock in every morning. After a while, folks start to question the point of showing up at all.

God's instruction to Habakkuk is a perfect antidote to this loss of enthusiasm. “Make the vision plain, so that he may run that reads it.” Vision is fuel; it is the energy on which an organization runs. Making the vision plain (accessible and simple to grasp) is critical to keeping people engaged and raising productivity.

Critically, vision is what keeps the glint in your eyes in the dark days. People and organizations experience periods when the numbers aren't looking so great. In those periods, it is vision that helps you retain the glint in your eyes. Great numbers will provide short-term bursts of motivation, but building a business is a marathon, and when the effect of motivation starts to wane, it is vision that kicks in and provides the fuel to continue the race.

The Lord leaves us an example in running our race as a marathon with our sight firmly fixed on the finish line. For the reason of the prize that was set before him, he ignored the daily grind of pursuing the vision. (Hebrews 12:2). The goal is, therefore, to constantly make clear the prize – the realization of the vision, so that people may draw strength to endure the rigors of the race.
