DAY 40 OF 50

Freeloaders Not Admitted Here

For everyone to whom much is given, of him shall much be required; and of him to whom men entrust much, they will require and demand all the more. Luke 12:48b AMPC

The Lord speaks here of the principle of commensurate value: that common sense prescribes that output should reflect input. He speaks of it in the sense that this is an established law that requires no elaboration, as it should be obvious to every thinking person.

The knife-edge of this principle, however, cuts both ways: just as businesses may believe that they are not getting commensurate value, staff very often also feel that they are not getting a commensurate reward for the effort they put into their work. This problem of unmet expectations invariably leads to conflict as employers and employees alike start to feel that they are being cheated.

For a business to thrive, both parties must feel that there is a fair match between what they give and what they get in return.

This principle should also guide the relative size of the rewards that go to different team members. Where this principle of commensurate value is not deeply entrenched in the culture, and evidently seen to be so, favoritism may creep in and once it does, it destroys morale.

Culture should make it clear that if you put in the work, you will reap the rewards. No glass ceilings of any kind should exist to limit the reach of a particular member or members of the team; otherwise, they will never give their best or rise to their full potential.

“God is no respecter of persons: ...” (Acts 10:34 KJV) Peter declared, and neither should you be. If you aim to build a team that performs optimally, the practice must be that everyone's work speaks for them.
