DAY 34 OF 50

Let the Mission Define the Course

John dressed in a camel-hair habit tied at the waist by a leather strap. He lived on a diet of locusts and wild field honey. Matthew 3:4 MSG

John the Baptist clearly wasn't one of the most fashionable people in the Bible. Even if you limited the contest to other people whose names began with the letter 'J', he would still lose to Joseph with his coat of many colors, and Jesus with his seamless cloak. This is because for John the Baptist his choice of apparel was more about his mission than it was about what was haute and trending on Jerusalem's catwalks.

Building your brand identity around trends can turn out to be a grave error because, as you might have realized, trends only last for so long. Meanwhile, your brand identity is not something you want to fiddle with every other year. To have any chance of entrenching your brand in the minds of the public, you need to allow for some stability and consistency.

Therefore, in deciding the brand identity of your business, you ought to take time to design something that connects deeply with your mission. Doing this gives you the dual advantage of creating something that will endure since your mission is quite likely a lifelong endeavor, as well as provides the public a constant reminder of what your company is really about.

This connection between brand identity and mission is what Jesus was referring to when He asked, "Who is this man in the wilderness that you went out to see? Did you find him weak as a reed, moved by every breath of wind? Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? Those who dress like that live in palaces, not out in the wilderness.” (Matthew 11:7- 8 NLT) Talk about dressing the part.

If, rather than follow his mission into the wilderness where it led, John the Baptist had instead tried to follow the popular trend, it is doubtful that it would have created an outcome where “... Jerusalem and all Judea and all the country round about the Jordan went out to him;” (Matthew 3:5 AMPC)
