Sex, Purity, And The Longings Of A Girl's HeartSample

Sex, Purity, And The Longings Of A Girl's Heart

DAY 5 OF 7

Real Talk That’s Real Honest

If you’re currently struggling with lust and losing the battle like I was, I know you can relate to my feelings of hopelessness. Nothing is more discouraging than losing a battle over and over again. Victory feels impossible. Whether you’re struggling with masturbation, pornography, erotica, (as these are the three consistently talked about topics in the emails we receive) or something else—you wonder if you’ll ever break free. And what makes these struggles even more challenging is that so few women actually talk about them. Even though we want to change, we’re too scared to expose the truth. The Bible has much to say about these relevant issues, and it’s time to engage one another in conversation.

The turning point in my own life came when I had finally had enough—I didn’t want to stay trapped any longer. I began to recognize that lust thrives in secret, in darkness. By sharing my secret with others, I would destroy its grip on me. By exposing my sin to the light, I would break through the lies and allow truth to transform my heart. The moment I accepted these truths, an invisible wall crumbled inside me. I knew exactly what I needed to do. I had never—ever—told anyone about my secret struggles with masturbation. I was terrified at the thought. But darkness had ruled for long enough. I knew I had to participate in order to receive the freedom Christ wanted for me.

That night, I cried out to God in prayer. I confessed my sin to Him (again) and genuinely repented. Something felt different this time. I also decided to talk to my mom and dad. My hands were shaking. My heart was pounding, but I told them everything. As I talked, a weight was lifted from my shoulders. My secrets were exposed, and my parents responded with immense grace and compassion. I didn’t feel weak and powerless as I had before.

Regardless of what you’re struggling with or hiding right now, I want you to know there is hope and you are not alone. We serve a powerful God, and no sin is too great for our Savior to conquer. I experienced this, and I want it for you too. “Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known” (Luke 12:2). Jesus is the safest place to begin our secret confessions.

What sexual struggles have you wrestle with (now or in the past) that felt too big to overcome?
