DAY 3 OF 5

DAY 3: An Unthinkable Conversation

In modern society water is generally available to anyone who wants it. Even if we are away from home, we can purchase bottled water to drink. There’s nothing like a refreshing glass of H2O to quench our thirst, but what about our need for spiritual water? Many people try to satiate their need for God with other things, but those things are incapable of satisfying our need for the living water Jesus spoke of during a life-changing conversation with the woman at the well.

They were very different people. He was a Jew. She was a Samaritan. How could He even know what she wanted or needed? What could they even talk about? The woman is like so many of us who have made choices that left us feeling unworthy of God’s love. She’d had five husbands and was making no secret of living with a sixth man she hadn’t even married. When Jesus encountered the woman, He set out to change her life. It was God’s plan all along for her to lead others in the village to salvation, but first she had to own her truth. So Jesus asked her to give Him what she thought she needed most: water. Christ knew that though the woman had come to the well in search of physical water, what she really thirsted for was something that would last much longer than water from a well. She thirsted for a real relationship that would save her soul.

Maybe you have been in search of something or someone to meet your deepest needs. And instead of turning to Christ, you continue to try to fill the void with more of the same. If you can relate, then the message for the woman at the well is also a message for you. The real deal is found only in God. Every relationship, every desire, every need can be met through Him and in Him. This woman received the gift of salvation during a conversation with the Messiah, and she was the reason many other Samaritans believed in Him.

God longs to have a conversation with us. It may seem unthinkable that the same God who created heaven and earth wants to talk to you. Yes, He still wants to change us with His life-giving truth. We need only stop and respond to His invitation to commune with Him. Have you talked with your heavenly Father today in prayer? If not, take a minute now to tell Him what’s on your heart. He’s listening.
