The Hope Quotient

Dag 40 van 60

We all have limits. None of us can keep cramming our lives with more and more. God is infinite. We are anything but. We tend to overestimate our abilities and underestimate our problems and how much time it will take to solve them. The culture insists we can do it all, have it all, be it all. It’s a lie. Eve fell for it. We don’t have to.

·  We have physical limits. None of us can go a month without sleep (although some try!)

·  We have emotional limits. None of us can cope with the weight of the whole world.

·  We have mental limits. None of us can process all the information around us.

·  We have space limits. None of us can be in more than one place at one time.

·  We have time limits. None of us can cram more than twenty-four hours in a day, no matter how many time management books we read.

In my opinion, the least obeyed Bible verse says to be still. However you get the rest you need—surfing, reading, or something else—don’t forget that God makes a huge deal of it, enough to inscribe “Keep the Sabbath” on a stone tablet.

These three things have to happen:

Resting physically. During the French Revolution, the nation outlawed the “Sabbath” because they wanted people to work. A few years later they had to reinstate it because the health of the nation had collapsed.

Refocusing spiritually. Watching a ball game won’t give you a new perspective on life, but getting in touch with God will.

Recharging emotionally. Solitude and being with people you love will recharge you.

Getting realistic about our limits will free us from overcommitment. That will restore energy, which leads to rising hope.

Think Up:

Occasionally, God wants you to rest and let Him take over. He’s still God.

Sometimes we just need someone to tell us it’s ok to rest and not feel guilty about it. You’re welcome. (Read on).
