Humble Leaders Ask for Help

“Anything that infuses us with humility is good. Even if it feels a bit like humiliation in the moment, the workings of humility within are a gift.” – Lysa Terkeurst

An essential component of leading with humility is knowing when to ask for help. It’s also about knowing who to ask and where to look. Deuteronomy 8:3 reminds us that we are to live on God’s Word. One way that we can humble our hearts is by inviting others to help us. We should find ways to involve our “teams,” whether that’s volunteer teams, co-workers, or family. Remember: It’s okay not to have all of the answers. It’s also okay to delegate and give responsibility to others.

Conversely, you need to know when your team needs help. Be ready to offer support before someone even asks for it. As a leader, it’s okay to say, “How can I help you?” Sometimes, it’s even better to say, “Do you want me to come with you to an appointment?” or “Can I bring you a meal on a hectic night?” Personally, I’m so incredibly thankful for my friends who have offered specific assistance in challenging seasons.

As you ask others for help, remind them that you are also there to help them. Check-in regularly to determine if they have any needs. Pay attention to their body language and behavior to observe signs of feeling overwhelmed. Paying attention to others’ needs is another way to take some of the focus off ourselves. Focusing on others is essential when humbling our hearts!
