Every Day Grateful

The psalms of the Bible are, first and foremost, a collection of songs. We can see that in Psalm 118, with the repetition of the opening verses. Can you hear it? His love endures forever!

We don’t know for sure, but this psalm may have been written by King David. God chose David to be the king of Israel and called him a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), but even he had his share of delays and disappointments, like we all do. First, David had to run for his life after the previous king, Saul, tried to kill him out of jealousy (1 Samuel 20). Then, when David finally became king, his household was filled with anger and betrayal. He wanted to build the Temple, but God said no because David was a man of war.

And yet. And yet.

In Psalm 118, the writer, perhaps David, recounts the things that have gone wrong and then says, “But in the name of the LORD…” In other psalms, David says, “But God…” No matter what happened in his life, David saw the way God protected, led, and loved him.

Can you see that in your own life? No matter what is happening now or will happen in the future, God loves you! Let’s move forward today with a heart like David’s, a heart of gratitude.
