God is good

‘How are you going?’ ‘Good’.

‘Nice holiday?’ ‘Good’.

‘What was your sandwich like?’ ‘Good’.

‘How do you describe God?’ ‘Good’.

Along with some other examples like ‘bad’, ‘happy’ and ‘sad’, the word ‘good’ is considered a weak adjective that is often overused in modern conversation. Every time you use the word good to describe something or someone, there’s a level of ambiguity.

How often have you said or heard the statement ‘God is Good’? Now of course He IS good. In so many ways. But how can we describe our God using the same word we may use to describe our lunch! So, let’s not focus on the word ‘good’ for a moment but rather on the word ‘God’. When we put the word ‘good’, or any other word, with the word ‘God’ it changes everything. Because of who God is.

God is creator, apparent in the size and majesty of His creation. God is love, shown through what He did for us through His son. God is powerful, illustrated in His amazing miracles. God is merciful, evident in His abundant forgiveness to us. The list goes on. When we meditate on God, suddenly this little word ‘good’ has a much larger meaning.

I don’t want to overthink it, but we must remember that who God is becomes more important than how we may try to describe Him, knowing that God is good because God is… God. We can have joy in the fact that a big God equals a big good!
